Dublin is made up of four local authority areas – Fingal County Council, South Dublin County Council, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Dublin City Council. Each of these Councils has its own Chairperson – a Lord Mayor in Dublin City, Mayors in South Dublin and Fingal, and a Cathaoirleach in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.
Earlier this year, the Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government asked the four Councils to come up with a plan for a new Directly-Elected Mayor for all of Dublin. It is intended to ask Dublin voters if they agree to having a Directly-Elected Mayor, or not, in a plebiscite (referendum) next May, at the same time as the local elections.
The four Dublin councils are charged with coming up with a proposal for what the new Directly-Elected Mayor will do and how this new position will work. That proposal will then go to the Minister and will form the basis of the plebiscite next May. This is a chance for Dubliners and those interested in Dublin to have their say on the kind of Directly-Elected Mayor they would like to see in our city and county.
