School Street Trial - Newbrook Road, Donaghmede, Dublin 13
Overview
Dublin City Council, with the support of the National Transport Authority, has implemented a School Street on Newbrook Road in Donaghmede to improve the safety of students and vulnerable road users accessing and exiting schools on the street. This trial will take place from Thursday, 28 August until the end of the school term on Friday, 20 December,
What is a School Street?
A School Street is a traffic-calming solution used to reduce the traffic outside a school by restricting access to the street during school drop-off and pick-up times.
How does it work?
- Restrict vehicular access to and from this section of Newbrook Road during school drop-off and pick-up times (8.00 - 9am and 1 - 2.45pm from Monday to Friday during term time) to only those vehicles seeking access to, or egress from, the residential properties on Newbrook Road. Residents will retain access during these time periods but are asked to avoid driving on this street during these times, where possible
- Students with additional needs will be permitted vehicular access with the permission of the relevant school
- Emergency vehicles, delivery and service vehicles will also be permitted access but we request that residents schedule deliveries or services outside these times, where possible.
How will it be enforced?
The School Street will be enforced by a traffic management company for the duration of the trial. Access to the street will be blocked off by bollards for the School Street period each day. These bollards can be removed to allow residents to access the street. (These bollards will only be in place between 8 - 9am and 1 - 2.45pm from Monday to Friday during school term time.)
What are the benefits?
- Improved safety for students
- Reduction in drop-offs, pick-ups and idling outside the school gate
- Reduced congestion, which benefits everyone using the street
- Promote safe, legal and considerate parking in the locality
- Reduced emissions and pollution on the street as well as improved air quality and reduced noise pollution
